Our Drum lessons are carried out in groups of 5 – 8 for an hour at a prearranged, regular time each week. Because of the physical demands of playing on a full sized drum kit we teach ages 9+ (their feet need to be able to reach the pedals). The studio uses state of the art Yamaha equipment including 2 acoustic drum kits, 1 electric kit, a full PA system as well as specially designed practice pads.
Students initially learn rhythms and techniques on the 8 practice pads and take it in turns at various points in the lesson to try these newly learned skills on the three drum kits. They play along to real rock and pop tunes while learning to read, write and improvise music.
We encourage all of our students to take regular Graded Exams, as its a great way to build confidence and really drive home the skills they learn as well as providing a benchmark of their progress. These are however optional should you choose it’s not for you. Our grades are fully accredited to be equivalent to GCSEs at the lower end all the way up to A levels and UCAS points for university entry at the higher grade 6 – 8 end.
All drums lessons are carried out by our professionally trained Yamaha Drum teachers. At Birmingham Music School we are lucky enough to have one of YAMAHA UK’s trained Drum Instructors as one of our teachers. This means he is responsible for training teachers from all over the country to teach drums using Yamaha teaching methods each year.
